Honored! My novella How to Make a Window Snake (Ad Hoc Fiction 2017) was named Best Novella at the UK's Saboteur Awards 2018. The awards are organized by Claire Trevien and the amazing team at Sabotage Reviews. The awards are a nod to writers of prose and poetry, reviewers, spoken-word performers and small and independent publishers and events organizers. The winners in five categories were chosen from the shortlists by reader vote and the awards ceremony came at the end of a two-day festival featuring discussions of small press publishing, various aspects of writing and reviewing, and a series of electrifying readings and spoken-word performances. It was a treat to spend time with talented writers, performers and publishers and to share the experience with the writer and instructor Jude Higgins, founder of the Bath Novella-in-Flash Award. How to Make a Window Snake was chosen by judge Meg Pokrass as winner of that award in 2017 and it was published in a book of the same name, along with stories by the second- and third-place winners, Joanna Campbell and Ingrid Jendrzejewski. Let's hope this win will draw new attention to the intriguing novella-in-flash form, in which a series of short-short, stand-alone stories are put together to tell one larger tale. Each writer takes a different approach and, as a reader, I always look forward to seeing what ends up on the page.
