On Giving Voice
Tough times can yield positive outcomes. I see more editors & publishers asking about ways to increase diverse voices in literature. Here are 2 ideas: One, yes, open yourself to hearing about difficult experiences like violence and structural discrimination. Two, allow us to write about everything, don’t give space to our voices only when you want to hear about certain subjects which you have decided are appropriate outlets for our input. This is a biggie. It reflects one of the underlying issues in discrimination of every kind. Allow writers of all stripes to live our lives fully in literature. We are not only “other” voices. We, too, are parents, children, siblings, artists, scientists, employees, bosses, lovers, citizens. We, too, are storytellers.
